Image 2: At the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, ethnographer Frances Densmore sits with Chief Mountain (1916). She invited the leader of the Blackfeetnation to interpret and translate a playback of (presumably) his own music, that was previously recorded on a wax roll. The general idea is that Densmore is recording his voice, which is defitely not true. The Device she holds is for playing (and listening) and not for speaking and recording.
